Modal

Modal is a rayon fabric type but it is a next-generation rayon compared to a rayon such as bamboo. It is made from the pulp of the beech tree. Therefore, it is a plant-based rayon and a more environmentally-friendly textile option. But it’s stronger, lightweight, more stretchy, durable and breathable compared to traditional rayons. Modal also has some antibacterial properties. These characteristics therefore make it a great fabric for men’s underwear or performance clothing.

Modal is produced by the Australian company Lenzing AG, which has a trademark for the fabric. Its brands include Lezing Modal, China Modal and Formatex. There are also lighter versions of the material, called Micro Modal and Modal Air. These are an even finer knit. Therefore, the material is softer and feels more luxurious.

Modal is often blended with cotton and spandex to give additional strength and stretch to underwear and clothing products.

Men’s modal underwear is super soft to the touch. But the underwear is also breathable and ventilating. It wicks away moisture well. That’s because it is 50% more absorbent than cotton. Therefore, it keeps you cool and dry for longer. It’s a great underwear choice for active men. But it also makes modal a great option for performance sportswear.

There is also a second-generation modal material called lyocell. Lenzing AG began production of TENCEL™ Lyocell fibre in the 1990s. Lyocell modal has a sustainable production process and is a modern method for producing regenerated cellulose fibre, usually from eucalyptus trees. Unlike rayon viscose and modal, the lyocell process dissolves the eucalyptus in a closed-loop system without any harmful chemicals. It’s also powered by bioenergy.
